Reducing food waste
The results of our 2016 Waste Audit show that the quantity of recyclables like paper and plastics in kerbside rubbish bags is reducing.  However, the quantity of organic waste like food scraps is increasing:
When food ends up in the landfill, it decomposes without oxygen, and as a result, it releases methane, a harmful greenhouse gas.  For both environmental and financial reasons, it’s important that we reduce the quantity of organic waste sent to landfill.  Here are some tips to achieve this:
Plan your meals to reduce the food you waste as well as saving some money and your valuable time.  Try to plan a meal that can be used for two nights e.g. a big pot of mince could be spaghetti bolognese one night and shepherd’s pie the next.
Only buy what you will use.  Bulk buying deals may look like a good deal but if you won’t use all of it then it is a waste of food and money.  Pantry essentials (rice, flour etc) and things that have long shelf lives like tinned tomatoes are ok to buy in bulk.
Plan to have a meal each week where you use up any bits and pieces that are in the fridge, pantry, and freezer. Start a compost heap for getting rid of inedible food like banana and citrus. For more ideas visit www.lovefoodhatewaste.co.nz
